The Basics of Camerawork

The Basics of Camerawork

If you have not yet touched on this subject with your coach then you have probably filming you and your friends swing a little off.

Here are some quick guidelines on how to take a proper swing video:

DTL (Down the Line):

  • This is the back view of your swing
  • Be sure to hold the camera steady or use a stand
  • Hold the camera right behind where the hands of the golfer rest at address

Face-On

  • Be sure to stand far enough to capture the whole width of the golfers swing
  • Be sure to hold the camera steady or use a stand
  • Hold the camera around hand-height as well

Now, these pointers will work for you if you want to take a view to the technical side of your swing or if you want to send it to your coach. However, your coach probably does not want you filming yourself every day, so maybe do it once a week or every two weeks.

Instead, try to get creative and film yourself from different angles and with different camera types. A GoPro camera is perfect for these kind of things. Watching all the great shots you hit will work as motivation material!
